Lubricants
Kobelco Eagle has developed a new type of
biodegradable lubricant based on polyakylene
glycol. The biodegradable lubricant, made with
polyethylene glycol, a type of polyakylene
glycol, can be used in stern tubes and
thrusters.

The lubricant is considered practically non toxic
by international testing standards, does not
leave a sheen on the surface of the water or
discolor the water. The lubricant is water
soluble and will perform with up to 10% sea
water content. There are two types of
lubricants, ST-77 was developed as a
replacement for stern tube oil for vessels using
white metal bearings and TH-100 is formulated
to replace gear oil for use in thrusters.

ST - 77 has successfully been used in over 50
vessels in the past two years and is now being
used as a suggested lubricant by a major CP
system manufacturer.

Both of the lubricants are designed to meet the
regulations of the USCG and EPA and meet the
intent of the EPA's no sheen rule and are
recommended by the EPA National Pollutant
Discharge Elimination System, section 2.2.9, as
an environmentally preferable lubricant.

The final National Pollutant Discharge
Elimination System (NPDES) Vessel General
Permit (VGP) can be found here:
